A perfect combination of fresh salsa and creamy guacamole with a tangy kick

A bowl of guacasalsa on a black kitchen counter

This recipe is one of my weekly favorites. It started as simple salsa, but one day when I was light on tomatoes, I added the avocado that was usually on the side. Voila—a new tradition was born. After workshopping names (salsamole didn't quite work), I landed on Guacasalsa, only to learn Trader Joe's has their own version. I still haven't tried theirs, but the name stuck.

This is perfect on taco salad, but I also love it with nachos, enchiladas, tacos, or pretty much any Mexican-inspired meal.

What I love about this recipe: You only need a few flexible ingredients. Make it your own!

Easy Homemade Guacasalsa

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 small avocado, roughly chopped

  • ½ cup red onion, chopped (or yellow if you prefer)

  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and chopped

  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped

  • ½ lemon, juiced

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Substitution ideas: No jalapeño? Add a dash of hot sauce or red chili flakes. Not a cilantro fan? Try basil or mint. If you want to use a lime, juice the whole fruit. When baby heirlooms are in season, mix up your tomato varieties for extra color and flavor.

Directions

  1. Chop cherry tomatoes into quarters until you have about 1 cup.

  2. Roughly chop the onion until it fills half the same measuring cup. (No measuring cup? Just use about half as much onion as tomatoes.)

  3. Seed the jalapeño, then chop into small pieces. Want a little heat? Leave in a few seeds.

  4. Remove cilantro leaves from stems, roughly chop, and add to your bowl.

  5. Slice the avocado in half. On the unpitted side, use a knife to score a grid pattern into the flesh. Gently squeeze to pop the cubes into the bowl. For a lighter version, use just half. Otherwise, repeat with the other side.

  6. Sprinkle sea salt over everything, then squeeze the lemon juice on top. (I love a lot of lemon, so I often use the whole thing.)

  7. Use a fork to gently toss and mix everything together.

  8. Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy!

I'd love to hear how it works for you!
